He Found This Coin While Walking Barefoot on Beach — It’s Now Worth $70K

Published On:

It was just another quiet morning walk by the shoreline—barefoot, with the sound of waves crashing gently and the warm sand beneath the feet. For 38-year-old Tim Carter, a local resident of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that stroll unexpectedly turned into a life-changing moment when he stumbled upon what he initially thought was an ordinary piece of metal buried in the sand.

But what he picked up wasn’t ordinary at all.

A Coin Half-Buried in Sand

Tim says he felt something cool and solid underfoot and instinctively reached down to check. What emerged from the wet sand was a tarnished, palm-sized coin—greenish from corrosion, with barely visible markings. It didn’t look like much at first glance. Most people might have tossed it aside. But something about the weight and the faint etching told Tim it might be old.

He pocketed it and went home, planning to look into it later. That decision would prove to be one of the most rewarding of his life.

Experts Confirm a Rare Find

After a bit of online research turned up some intriguing possibilities, Tim brought the coin to a local numismatist. The expert was stunned.

Initial inspection revealed that the coin was a rare colonial-era Spanish silver dollar, also known as a Piece of Eight. Coins like this were widely circulated during the 1600s and 1700s, especially along the eastern seaboard of what is now the United States. These coins often traveled with merchants and pirates, many of whom frequented the Atlantic coast.

What made this coin even more remarkable was its mint condition despite being lost for centuries. It bore the markings of a specific Spanish mint and carried a date stamp from 1715—the same year as a famous Spanish treasure fleet that sank off the Florida coast.

Estimated Value: $70,000

Following a thorough authentication process and expert appraisal, the coin’s estimated value was placed at $70,000—a jaw-dropping sum for something Tim quite literally stumbled upon with his bare feet.

The find has since made waves in coin collector circles, with some auction houses reportedly reaching out with offers even higher than the appraised value.

Tim has yet to decide whether he’ll keep the coin, sell it, or place it on display for historical preservation. “I still can’t believe something like this was just lying there on the beach. Makes you wonder how many more treasures are hiding right under our feet,” he said.

A Reminder of Hidden History

The discovery has reignited interest in the colonial coinage and lost treasures along the American coastline. Beachcombers and amateur metal detectorists are now paying more attention to the sands of popular coastal towns. While finds like Tim’s are incredibly rare, his story is a reminder that history can sometimes surface in the most unexpected ways.
